What is gpt-oss?
gpt-oss is OpenAI's first open-weight language model since GPT-2. It comes in two sizes: gpt-oss-120b, with 117 billion parameters of which 5.1 billion are active for each token, and gpt-oss-20b, with 21 billion parameters and 3.6 billion active. Both are mixture-of-experts models released under the Apache 2.0 license, which allows modification and commercial use.
It is popular: the original gpt-oss-120b was downloaded about 3.1 million times on Hugging Face in the 30 days to 21 October 2026.
What the original gpt-oss refuses
On 21 October 2026 we sent the same eight prompts to four models available in UncutGPT, once each, with no system prompt or custom instructions. The prompts are the kind of adult requests people say mainstream AI refuses.
gpt-oss-120b answered the festival harm-reduction question with no warning at all, more directly than GPT-6.1 Sol did. Then it refused the explicit scene and the horror gore with the same reply: “I'm sorry, but I can't help with that.”
We tested the models directly, the way UncutGPT connects to them. The ChatGPT and Grok apps add their own instructions and safety settings, so they can be stricter, and the same model can answer differently on another run.

How uncensored gpt-oss versions are made
- Abliteration finds the direction inside the model's activations that leads to refusals and removes it from the weights. No retraining is needed.
- Heretic is an open-source tool that runs abliteration automatically and tunes it to keep the model's quality. Versions with “heretic” in the name are usually made with it.
- Fine-tuning retrains the model on examples without refusals. Some uncensored versions combine it with abliteration.
- Removing refusals can cost some quality, and versions differ a lot. Test one on your own prompts before relying on it.
