Is ChatGPT adult mode available?
No. On 26 March 2026 the Financial Times reported that OpenAI had paused adult mode indefinitely. OpenAI told the paper it was waiting for long-term research on the effects of sexually explicit chats and emotional attachment to AI. We found no announcement of a launch or a new date since then.
Adult mode timeline
- October 2025: Sam Altman says ChatGPT will “treat adult users like adults” and allow erotica for verified adults, starting in December.
- December 2025: the launch moves to the first quarter of 2026.
- 7 March 2026: OpenAI delays it again to focus on higher-priority work, including smarter models and personality changes.
- 26 March 2026: the Financial Times reports the plan is on hold indefinitely.
Why OpenAI paused it
The reporting points to pushback over unhealthy emotional attachment to chatbots and over keeping minors out. An adult mode depends on telling adults from teenagers, and that remains hard to do at ChatGPT's scale.
Can you enable ChatGPT adult mode?
You can't, because it doesn't exist yet. There is no toggle in settings and no prompt that unlocks it. Prompts that claim to do so are jailbreak attempts, which tend to fail and can get an account flagged.
What ChatGPT writes today
We asked four models for the same three pieces of adult fiction. GPT-6.1 Sol, the newest GPT model, handled the swearing, softened the explicit scene and toned down the gore.
We tested the models directly, the way UncutGPT connects to them. The ChatGPT and Grok apps add their own instructions and safety settings, so they can be stricter, and the same model can answer differently on another run.

Alternatives for adult creative writing
- Uncensored models write mature fiction between adult characters. On UncutGPT, adult roleplay asks you to confirm you're 18 or older.
- Grok 4.7 is the most permissive mainstream model we tested and wrote all three scenes.
- Open models you run at home give you full control, if your computer can handle them.
- Whichever you use, the same lines apply: no minors, no sexual content about real people and nothing non-consensual.
