How it works
Products use system prompts to set the assistant's personality, rules and format. In roleplay, the system prompt describes the character the model plays. Custom instructions are a user-editable version of the same idea.
Why it matters
System prompts shape tone and limits as much as the model itself, which is why the same model can feel different in different apps.
